Central
System Software
When it comes to Advanced Traffic
Management Systems (ATMS) and Intelligent Transportation
Systems (ITS), no company has more experience than Siemens
ITS. Whether the application is as simple as coordinating
arterial signals, or as complicated as running adaptive
traffic control over multi-jurisdictional networks,
Siemens ITS and Western Systems can provide you with
a solution that exceeds your expectations.
| The
ACTRA system is a fully scalable Advanced Traffic
Management System that can operate as a stand-alone
PC, but also has the functionality to operate

ACTRA is a traffic configuration tool developed
by Siemens for use on handheld devices. Lightweight
and portable, Pocket ACTRA is a cost effective
alternative to field technician laptop systems.
Pocket ACTRA software provides
view and edit configuration information for key
data in the local controller along with MARC master
support. Additional software included in the Pocket
ACTRA package provides a utility to key in or
display SEPAC data from the 2070ATC controller
front panel. |
| "Lightweight

laptop systems." |
|
|
| Using Pocket ACTRA software
the user can: |
| • |
Quickly configure communications |
| • |
Add intersections and master controllers |
| • |
Upload and download controller data |
| • |
Transfer data from one controller to another |
| • |
Set time, and monitor the status of the intersection |

The Traffic System That Fits
in a Pocket
Pocket ACTRA is a must have for technicians working
out in the field. Combined with ACTRA or Marc NX, data
can be transferred from the central system database
to the Pocket PC, and then brought back to the central
system. Information is readily available, in an easy
to carry device.
| i2
is designed for ease of use to accommodate
the multi-device, multi-jurisdiction expansion
necessary for today's intelligent transportation
systems applications. Expandable and customizable
as an agency grows and changes, i2 provides
a full featured, object oriented graphical user
interface to support centralized management and
control. Components are implemented in a single
integrated platform for information management,
graphical data display, and system control. Graphical
icons provide easy and intuitive access to traffic
control data, real-time data, parameter database,
and graphical image files. Additional modules
can be added to the system to incorporate CCTV,
DMS, traffic adaptive, and transit priority control.
i2 is compatible with NEMA, Model 170, Model
2070 variants, and advanced transportation controllers,
including AB3418 for California and NextPhase
controller software. |
| "Expandable
and customizable as an agency grows
and changes, i2 provides a full featured,
object oriented graphical user interface
to support centralized management
and control." |
|

Crossing Boundaries
With the implementation of the Center to Center interface
the i2 traffic control system becomes an integral component
of a compelling regional system with communication links
between other central systems and interface programs
such as Insight.
| MarcNX
is a 2nd generation, PC-based closed-loop traffic
management software system. Users can monitor
and control intersections from a central location
through an interface based on the familiar Windows
environment.
Designed for intuitive use,
MarcNX includes easy to use graphics,
customizable reports, operator alerts and an event
log with searchable historical records of events.
Administrative control and password protected
system log-in allow user access to be defined
by data type, in addition to an optional multi-jurisdictional
security feature. |
|
Based on a region's communication
abilities, MarcNX can support up to real
time display of a coordinated arterial greens. Uploading
and downloading of controller data does not interrupt
normal traffic control operation.
Big Things Come in Small Packages
The MarcNX system is highly customizable
and expandable to fit a variety of traffic requirements,
and provides a growth path to ACTRA. The perfect system
for smaller cities and municipalities that want many
advanced features but in a smaller closed-loop system,
MarcNX provides the most impressive traffic
control programming features of any closed-loop system
available.
| Regionally
integrated traffic management is a challenge for
most municipalities. Detecting incidents, providing
emergency response, and providing traffic mitigation
is a regional concern and public service responsibility.
The difficulty in accomplishing regional integration
increases dramatically when incorporating numerous
jurisdictions and ITS devices. With the development
of Insight, traffic agencies can achieve regional
transportation management and yet maintain ultimate
ITS device control by respective agency owners. |

ATMs to provide center-to-center data
and control capability through the
Internet". |

Always
A Solutions Insight
Insight is a web-based technical application that allows
multiple end-users to share and coordinate data between
jurisdictions, while utilizing the National ITS Standards.
Under this regional approach, strategic data are shared
between systems using the NTCIP center-to-center communication
protocols. Using a standard web browser, users have
access to real-time status data from traffic sensors,
DMS, and CCTV camera devices. The user has the ability
to post incident information on a regional display.
Secure and restricted access levels allow designated
users to collect and post data. Agencies set permissions
for users and groups who are then able to subscribe
to specific services. The system is expandable and additions
and upgrades can be phased in over time, providing a
cost efficient solution to the end-user.

Powerhouse of the Regional System
Insight software is intended to augment fully-featured
ATMs to provide center-to-center data and control capability
through the Internet. Browser-based interfaces eliminate
the need for costly and cumbersome installation of very-high-bandwidth
communications channels between TMC's and client software
in each facility. The wide availability of this type
of communication makes it easy to incorporate any jurisdiction
into a regional network.

|
SCOOT, which
represents Split, Cycle and Offset Optimization Technique,
is a dynamic, on-line, real-time method of signal control.
| Principles of SCOOT |
| • |
Optimization of the network is achieved
using small, regular changes designed to avoid major
disturbance of traffic flow. |
| • |
Cycle Split and Offset are all optimized. |
| • |
Performance indexes (stops
and delays) are used to measure effectiveness similar
to TRANSYT. |
Why Move When
You Can SCOOT?
A proven strategy for 'Hot Spot' Traffic Control that
can be implemented on a selected basis, SCOOT uses a
flexible coordination plan that will expand or contract
to match the latest traffic conditions. SCOOT makes
an ideal complement to standard Time of Day and Traffic
Responsive based traffic control.

 |
Transportation agency cameras are
used to survey the nation's transportation infrastructure
for the purpose of monitoring traffic flow conditions
and coordinating incident response actions. Additionally,
public safety and Homeland Security cameras are installed
for providing security surveillance at points of critical
importance. Often these assets could be used for multiple
purposes, but are not. No standard procedures for sharing
such assets have been available, until now.
Seeing is Believing
Siemens' NextView is a video distribution and management
software package that allows full motion video images
from up to 500 cameras to be viewed by up to 1,000 users
simultaneously over the Internet. It supports camera
control and can be used with new and existing CCTV systems.
NextView offers Internet & intranet capability which
enables varied control levels, high performance for
bandwidth application, and a simple and customizable
interface.
| ACS-Lite
is a special adaptive control algorithm designed
exclusively for use in closed loop applications.
Developed under contract with FHWA, the software
optimizes a series of controllers by adjusting
their local splits and offsets at very small incremental
values. This is a very robust solution for arterial
corridors that do not lend themselves to centralized
computer system control. |
