Preventing Wrong-Way Crashes: WSDOT Pilots Safety Technology on SR-18

Wrong-way crashes are rare, but often catastrophic. To address this critical safety risk, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) has launched a pilot project on State Route 18 in King County. With support from Western Systems and Carmanah Technologies, four off-ramps now feature new wrong-way driver detection systems designed to prevent crashes before they happen.

Smarter Safety at the Ramp

The SR-18 pilot combines multiple layers of detection and alerts. Solar-powered LED “Wrong Way” signs developed by Carmanah Technologies provide the first line of defense, activating immediately when radar sensors detect a vehicle entering the ramp in the wrong direction. At select ramps, dual camera systems with video analytics add another layer of validation, escalating alerts to WSDOT’s Northwest Region Transportation Management Center (TMC) if needed. The layered approach ensures both drivers and agencies can act quickly to avoid tragedy.

Technology Powered by Clean Energy

The system reflects WSDOT’s commitment to modernizing infrastructure with sustainable technology. Radar detection is paired with solar-powered flashing signs, reducing reliance on utility power while maintaining reliability. This approach not only increases roadway safety but also aligns with broader clean energy goals.

Real-Time Alerts for Faster Response

Once fully commissioned, the SR-18 system will notify TMC operators the moment a wrong-way driver is detected. Real-time awareness is crucial, as it enables operators to alert the Washington State Patrol and incident response teams quickly. Faster notifications mean faster interventions, helping to reduce the risk of high-speed collisions.

Project Timeline and Next Steps

Installation was completed in the summer of 2025, and WSDOT and Western Systems are now reviewing the performance data. Insights gained from the pilot will inform future deployments and strengthen statewide safety strategies. The goal is to create corridors where technology, operations, and planning work together to keep Washington drivers safe.

A Focus on Prevention

“Wrong-way crashes don’t happen often, but when they do, the stakes are incredibly high,” said Kai Antrim, Sales Manager at Western Systems. “It’s rewarding to support a program focused on prevention, not just reaction — and one that’s grounded in Washington’s real-world needs. We’re grateful to support this effort alongside Carmanah Technologies.”

Building Safer Highways Across Washington

The SR-18 pilot is part of WSDOT’s larger commitment to reducing serious injuries and fatalities statewide. By testing new approaches, such as radar detection, solar-powered signage, and video analytics, Washington is gaining valuable insights into how technology can prevent wrong-way crashes and improve corridor safety.
