Optimize Traffic Monitoring with Siqura Cameras

From side streets to large intersections, a variety of safety and monitoring concerns happen on the road every day. Placing detection sensors throughout your traffic system is a great start to gaining insight on your traffic behavior, but not enough to tell the full story.

Eyes on the road can go a long way in managing your traffic flow in real-time. And a solid traffic monitoring system can get your team up to speed on the needs of the commuters in your community.

But which traffic monitoring cameras are right for your network? And does your video management system require an upgrade in order to keep up with today’s traffic requirements?

In a recent webinar, John Sporny, Western Sales Manager at Siqura, and Jon Nagel, Territory Manager at Western Systems, discussed how Siqura’s video traffic monitoring cameras and video management software can provide essential visibility at all your intersections so that you can better support traffic flow and emergency traffic situations within your community.

Why Video Traffic Monitoring?

A video traffic monitoring system helps tell the whole story of what’s going on out in the field. Video support enables your team to make the right traffic decisions for your commuters and travelers. Cameras can act as eyes out in your intersections and out in the road so that you can work towards improving traffic flow situations. And respond in real-time to circumstances that impede traffic flow or present a safety risk.

In addition, video traffic monitoring can support research and traffic studies. With the right video traffic monitoring system in place, strong traffic behavior analytics can be collected so that your team can make decisions on traffic flow based on visible evidence.

A traffic monitoring system can only be as strong as the cameras and video management system behind it. Siqura provides best in class, purpose-built cameras and monitoring systems designed to fit your needs.

Benefits of a Bubble-less Camera

A common myth about bubble-less cameras (or dome-less cameras) is that no dome means no protection of the camera lens. The truth is that bubble-less cameras like Siqura’s PD910 are designed to perform in tough conditions. Because there’s no dome, the surface of the camera lens is coated with nano glass that can withstand hard impacts as well as scratches, smudges and fingerprints. The Siqura PD910 is IP66 rated meaning it is ruggedized to perform in all traffic applications.

Bubble-less cameras require significantly less maintenance in comparison to dome cameras. The camera lens is designed to repel water, dirt, insects and grime from sticking to its surface, while dome cameras demand continuous in-person upkeep to clean all the clutter build-up. Camera domes tend to cloud fairly often, meaning that domes need regular replacement in order for the cameras to provide full visibility. In environments with strong precipitation, they run the risk of pooling liquid in the dome as well.

Dome cameras are notorious for showing optical distortion when headlights hit it, while bubble-less cameras can provide accurate visibility to the traffic situation. More specifically, Siqura’s PD910 provides a 20-degree tilt above horizon and still provides clear visibility, while dome cameras tend to distort views any degree above horizon. Because bubble-less cameras provide a extended range of visibility, these cameras can be mounted on lower poles for more stability and are capable of capturing activity in a hilly environment.

Benefits of a Fixed Dome Camera

Some intersections require a full view of the situation in order for your team to better assess traffic flow and behavior. In these situations, a fixed dome camera provides full visibility in all directions with an 185° field of view at full resolution.

A fixed dome camera like Siqura’s FD360IR-E-12 offers high resolution visibility, including the ability to select a full 360° view, a dewarped panoramic view (2x 180°) a dewarped single view and a dewarped quad view.

While often used for indoor environment surveillance, fixed dome cameras can be installed for outdoor traffic monitoring while withstanding weather conditions. Because of the tinted dome glass around the camera lens, it’s difficult to tell which direction the camera is pointing.

Features of Siqura’s FD360IR-E-12

  • 1/1.7” progressive CMOS
  • 12MP @ 20 fps
  • Quad-streams H.264 and MJPEG video

  • IP66 and impact rating IK10
  • ONVIF Profile S conformant

Does Your Video Management System Need an Upgrade?

Most video management systems today can provide additional value beyond video surveillance of your traffic intersections. Your team can also receive analytical insight into traffic patterns, security data and camera performance—that is, with the right video management system like Siqura’s VDG Sense Video Management System in place.

Does your video management system only provide the basics? If your team cannot collect significant traffic data from your current system, you are missing out on opportunities for stronger safety measures across your traffic network.

Consider upgrading your video management system if any of the following applies to your system:

  • Utilizes a traditional CCTV surveillance system with old equipment
  • Increasing maintenance costs for ongoing required support
  • Lacking intelligent video analytics for monitoring traffic, on-site locations and parking garages
  • Deficient video analytics for improving traffic flow and on-site operations
  • No established standardization of VMS system equipment

In a previous webinar, Western Systems teamed up with Siqura to explore how VDG Sense Video Management System can both simplify video surveillance management and provide insightful traffic analytics to better understand and serve your community.

Features of VDG Sense

  • Fully customizable VMS platform
  • Simple video walls and clients
  • Event driven Macros
  • Upgrade as needed
  • Redundancy/failover
  • 3rd party cameras and IO supported
  • Developers API
  • Web and Mobile Clients supported
