With nearly two decades at Western Systems, John L. Brannan has been instrumental in driving the company’s success in delivering innovative transportation solutions and providing exceptional customer support. As Director of Sales and Service, John leads a team of dedicated professionals who ensure that every product and service offered by Western Systems meets the highest standards of quality and reliability.

We sat down with John to discuss his career journey, recent impactful projects, and his approach to overcoming the daily challenges that cities, agencies, and contractors face in traffic management.

Q: John, can you tell us about your journey in the traffic management industry and how it led you to Western Systems?

John Brannan: My journey began over 25 years ago as a Traffic Signal Technician for the City of Goodyear, Arizona. I started maintaining fiber and radio communications, troubleshooting signal issues, and working closely with local agencies to keep traffic flowing safely. After several years in the public sector, I joined Phoenix Highway Services as the Operations Manager, where I developed multi-year contracts and managed maintenance for over 100 intersections. I worked with multiple agencies and manufactures to maintain their signals to highest standards and help reduce their liability.

In 2006, I transitioned to Western Systems, and I’ve been here ever since. What drew me to Western Systems was the opportunity to work directly with a variety of customers across the western U.S. and to leverage my technical background in a role that combines both sales and support. Over the years, my role has expanded to overseeing our sales and engineering teams, and I’m proud to lead a group that is focused on providing real-world solutions for our customers.

Q: What motivated you to become the Director of Sales and Service, and how has this role evolved over your 19 years at Western Systems?

John Brannan: My passion has always been about solving problems for customers. As a Director, I get to blend my technical knowledge with a strategic approach to help shape how we support our clients and grow our business. Initially, the role was focused primarily on product support and managing distribution agreements. But as we expanded, I took on a larger role in business strategy, product development, and guiding the overall direction of our sales and service teams.

This focus has been evident in projects like the recent  Yunex Traffic SCOOT adaptive traffic system deployment in Federal Way, where our team collaborated with the city to enhance mobility and reduce congestion. Additionally, we’re working on upgrading the traffic network in Port Angeles, which involves implementing Currux Vision, Tactics, and Intuicom solutions to create a responsive and efficient system along Highway 101 and the downtown core. These projects highlight how we bring innovative, scalable solutions to our partners.

Q: What do you think sets Western Systems apart from other companies in the industry?

John Brannan: It’s our commitment to customer support and long-term partnerships. We’re not just here to sell products—we’re here to ensure that our customers have the support they need long after the purchase. We work closely with cities, agencies, and contractors to understand their unique challenges and develop solutions that fit their goals. Our technical team is always on hand to provide proactive maintenance, hands-on training, and rapid troubleshooting, which really sets us apart.

Projects like the Yunex Traffic adaptive traffic system deployment and the Port Angeles traffic network upgrade illustrate our dedication to providing tailored solutions that address real-world challenges. These systems are designed not only to meet immediate needs but also to adapt and grow with the communities they serve.

Q: What are some of the common challenges you see customers facing today, and how does Western Systems help them overcome these hurdles?

John Brannan: One of the biggest challenges is maintaining reliable communication between systems, especially in remote or challenging environments. For example, in Port Angeles, we’re helping the city transition from fixed-timed intersections to a responsive system that uses real-time data to manage traffic flow. This allows for better situational awareness and quicker adjustments in case of emergencies.

In Federal Way, the SCOOT system provides adaptive traffic control that reduces congestion and enhances safety by dynamically adjusting signal timings based on current traffic conditions. These types of innovative solutions are critical for cities striving to improve mobility and reduce emissions while keeping road users safe.

Q: Can you share a recent success story where your team helped a customer solve a particularly tough challenge?

John Brannan: The Federal Way SCOOT deployment stands out as a significant achievement. By partnering with Transpo Group and Yunex Traffic, we implemented a system that optimizes traffic flow and reduces congestion. Our technicians, including Steven Thater, worked diligently to ensure seamless installation and support, showcasing the expertise and dedication of our team.

Similarly, in the Port Angeles, we’re creating an entire traffic network with a central system that allows remote monitoring and adjustments, offering the city unprecedented flexibility and control. These projects are great examples of how we deliver impactful solutions tailored to our customers’ unique challenges.

Q: What inspires you most about working in this industry?

John Brannan: What inspires me the most is the impact we have on people’s lives. Whether it’s reducing commute times, enhancing safety, or supporting a city’s sustainability goals, knowing that our work contributes to better communities is incredibly fulfilling. I love being part of a team that’s solving real-world problems and helping cities like Federal Way and Port Angeles thrive.

Q: When you’re not working, how do you like to spend your time?

John Brannan: I’m a bit of a tech enthusiast, so I enjoy tinkering with electronics and staying updated on the latest technology trends. But I also love spending time outdoors with my family. We have four sons and enjoy camping and exploring new places—it’s a great way to unwind and recharge.

John’s leadership and dedication to customer success have been pivotal in Western Systems’ growth and reputation as a trusted partner in traffic management solutions. His focus on understanding customer needs and delivering innovative support services has set a high standard in the industry.
