City of San José Deploys Over 90% Accurate Red Light Violation Detection and Prevention System

Red light running is one of the leading causes of severe urban crashes in the United States. In 2022, over 1,100 people were killed in red light–related incidents, many of them pedestrians, cyclists, and other drivers who were not at fault. San José, California, known for its commitment to smart innovation and public safety, sought a scalable, real-time solution to address this growing concern.

Timeline

The collaboration between San José, Currux Vision, and Western Systems began in early 2024, with initial site assessments and system planning.

Deployment started by mid-2024, and by November 2024, the city reported full implementation at high-risk intersections with measurable improvements in violation detection.

Solution

The City of San José partnered with Currux Vision, a U.S.-based AI traffic analytics company, and Western Systems, a leading intelligent transportation distributor, to implement an AI-powered red light violation detection and prevention system.

Using existing video infrastructure, Currux Vision’s platform leverages advanced AI models and fast video processors to:

  • Detect red light violations with over 90% accuracy
  • Predict red light runs by analyzing a vehicle’s speed and distance from the stop bar
  • Communicate in real-time with traffic signal controllers to extend red lights or hold green phases, preventing side-impact and rear-end collisions

Impact

This technology has empowered the City of San José to:

  • Gain real-time, actionable data on dangerous intersections
  • Reduce the likelihood of crashes through predictive signal adjustments
  • Build a safer environment for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists

“Deploying this technology is a testament to our commitment to using AI for societal good, especially in enhancing urban traffic safety. The accuracy and impact of our systems are paving the way for safer cities,” said Alex Colosivschi, CEO of Currux Vision.

“Integrating Currux Vision’s technology gives us the actionable data needed to reduce crashes,” added Ho Nguyen, ITS Manager, City of San José.

“We are proud to support San José with reliable, AI-based traffic analytics,” noted Zach Hoiting, Sr. VP at Western Systems.
